With an incidence of more than 18 million new cases each year, cancer leads patients to face several challenges, which can degrade their mental health. Identifying depression in cancer patients is always challenging, even while the patient has regular medical appointments; but this becomes even harder when the person has less frequent medical appointments. This can result in neglecting survivors’ psychological and emotional well-being, leading to a diminished quality of life.

FAITH, a research project funded under the Horizon 2020 framework, believes in a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care and survivorship. FAITH is working towards creating an innovative, AI-based solution able to identify signs of poor mental health in everyday life. The solution will combine passive activity tracking and proactive user engagement, relying on an App installed on patients’ mobile devices to gather information.

But why is the project needed, and how does our solution really work?

In this video, project coordinator Gary McManus (Walton Institute of Technology) and project partners Stefanos Venios (Suite5) and Xenia Beltran (UPM – LifeSTech) provide an overview of the project and the AI solution we are developing.
